Chess for kids doesn’t have to be complicated. There’s no need for hours of boring chess lessons to understand the basic rules of the game! As with all subjects, learning should be fun, and chess is no different. After this short and entertaining chess lesson from GM Susan Polgar, you or your kids have endless hours of enjoyment ahead playing games together.
Chess for beginners might be a little overwhelming. There’s all those pieces, all those squares! Where do you put the pieces, how do they move, and how do you win?! Don’t worry – former Women’s World Chess Champion Susan Polgar makes it easy to understand in this except from her well-known chess DVD “Learn Chess in 30 Minutes, Chess for Absolute Beginners.”
Susan is joined by mascots King Harold and Champion the Knight, arguably the most fun piece on the board! FIDE Master Paul Truong does an excellent job of providing an extra perspective on how improving the basics of your game will have a drastic positive effect on your entire game. This chess DVD is an absolute classic talking about chess for kids, or chess for beginners.
This chess for kids lesson starts off with a look at the chess board, and how each one of the 64 squares has its own name. You’ll learn what the kingside and queenside are, and what the most important areas of the board are. Every now and then, Susan Polgar introduces a quick quiz to help remind you of what you have learned, to lock in the important rules of chess.
Next, you’ll learn what each of the pieces are, how they move across the board, and how valuable they are. Part of what makes chess so exciting is how the pieces all move differently from each other. You’ll see which piece is the most powerful (we’ll give you a clue – it’s not Spiderman!), and why the King is the most important! You’ll also discover some special moves, even from the smallest pieces at hand – the pawns. Next up, Susan teaches how to capture the opponents pieces!
