When Bill Gates faced off in a Blitz game against Magnus Carlsen, he was clearly stepping into Carlsen’s domain!
Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, billionaire and philantropist, faced off against the World Chess Champion during the talkshow “Skavlan” in 2014, recorded in a studio in London. Carlsen started with 30 seconds on his clock, and Gates with 2 minutes – by the time he’d win the game, Carlsen would only up 12 of those seconds!
Knowing that Carlsen is probably one of the greatest chess players to ever grace the planet, the result is hardly surprising, but we can still learn something from it. In this video GM Damian Lemos analyzes the game that lasted less than 10 moves, and only 1 minute and 19 seconds.
Gates played as White, and Carlsen as Black. It started with 1. e4 Nc6, which is the start of the Nimzowitsch defence. The Nimzowitsch is a nice defense to consider playing in rapid and blitz chess because Black quickly creates an attack.
The game continued 2. Nf3 d5 3. Bd3. Here, 3. exd5 was probably better for Bill Gates, because after …Qxd5, White develops the knight to c3 with tempo.
Carlsen responded with 3…Nf6 4. exd5 Qxd5 5. Nc3 Qh5 6. 0-0 Bg4, with Carlsen being aggressive and looking for a quick win. Bill Gates 7. h3 wasn’t the best move, with Be2 being a better option. With h3, the kingside is irreparably weakened. For example, 7…Bxf3 8. Qxf3 Qxf3 9. gxf3 would leave the pawn structure in a mess, and give Black a much better endgame. You don’t want to give Carlsen any favors!
After 7. h3, Carlsen played 7…Ne5, looking for a fast win. 8. hxg4 Nfxg4 and Black threatens to capture on f3 with check, and then mate with Qxh2#. 9. Nxe5 Qh2#… it looks like an overpowering attack from Black, but actually had White played 9. Re1, the story may have been different. Well, perhaps Bill Gates would have lasted a few more moves anyway! After Re1, Black doesn’t have a successful attack as the White King can run away.
