Build a center and crush the Sicilian!

In the video “c3 Sicilian” by IM Gary Lane, we are shown an opening system to fight against the aggressive Sicilian Defense that many Black players play.

The way we are shown to face this opening is with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.c3. The c3 Sicilian has a great pedigree, having been played by Grandmasters Michael Adams and Anatoly Karpov. Garry Kasparov has even lost to it, so we know that it can be a powerful answer to the Sicilian Defense.

Gary begins by showing us the different ways that Black can fight against the c3 variation. The main moves that are examined are 2…d5 and 2…Nf6. Both moves attack White’s center, but White still keeps a good advantage in either case. After these two main moves are looked at, we are also shown a few of the other side lines that Black can try to play.

How does White build a strong center in many of these lines? What attacking chances does White gain, no matter what response Black plays? How can this powerful opening help us to strengthen our play? Watch the video to find out!
