Most chess players love to win their games with impressive sacrifices that rip open the King position leading to an inevitable checkmate. They make for exciting chess and great memories. However, the tactics only work when you’ve already built a superior position – and that’s the hard part.

As Rudolf Spielmann once lamented whilst talking about the 4th World Champion:

I can see the combinations as well as Alekhine, but I cannot get into the same positions.

Getting those positions requires you to outplay your opponent in the middlegame which requires a large amount of technical knowledge, like how to play with different pawn structures, as well as accurate positional evaluation. The best way to improve in these areas is by studying the games of the great players, preferably with explanations from somebody who understands the subtleties.

This is the aim of “Mastering the Middlegame”, a highly instructive examination of 4 brilliant games with expert commentary from GM Damian Lemos. Each game features one player building a strong position with accurate chess middlegame play before deciding the game with spectacular tactics.

In this preview, GM Landa takes on GM Shaposhnikov in a Caro-Kann Defense. After a slight inaccuracy in the opening, White grabs the initiative and never looks back. Watch how GM Landa takes full advantage of the small edge he is given. With natural looking moves, he gets a powerful looking position but Black seems to have everything covered. What happens next is one of the most spectacular finishes you will ever see!

Enjoy this video and remember to check out the DVD which includes 3 other brilliant games including wins by Magnus Carlsen and Alexander Grischuk.
