Studying the classics is an essential part of any chess player’s education. The great games of the past can give us an arsenal of brilliant ideas which will help us understand chess better as well as help us find similar winning themes in our own games.
Every player today has, in one way or another, learned from their predecessors. The development of opening theory is an example of original schemes with thousands of small improvements discovered over time.
Typical sacrifices, positional plans and endgame technique can all be picked up quickly by seeing them in action and that is where the games of the finest players of the past can really help the ambitious chess improver.
That is the basis of the latest DVD from GM Damian Lemos, “Mastering the Classics.” GM Lemos presents some of the most instructive games from the World Champions Jose Raul Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine and Tigran Petrosian. You cannot fail to improve your chess understanding with these clear cut, beautiful games.
In this preview, GM Lemos analyzes a game between the 3rd World Champion, Capablanca and one of the strongest players of the day, Rudolf Spielmann.
Right from the opening, Capablanca gets an edge with accurate moves while his opponent makes small errors that most players would usually get away with. Capablanca pinpoints the weaknesses in Black’s position and increases the pressure before executing an ingenious winning plan that is surprising at first but, as GM Lemos explains, completely logical when the position is understood.
Enjoy this classic game and remember to check out the DVD.
