One of the few shortcuts to chess mastery is the study of games played by the great players.
In “Learning from Capablanca”, former FIDE World Champion GM Rustam Kasimdzhanov highlights the most important lessons and demonstrations of technique we can learn from the 3rd World Champion.
For the lesson in this free preview, Rustam is joined by GM Vallejo Pons (also known as Paco). The subject matter is one Nimzowitsch considered the most important strategic principle to know: how to dominate the 7th rank.
In the games of Capablanca we see his natural technique for subtly forcing his opponents to make concessions and give him an advantage. Bobby Fischer considered Capablanca to be one of the greatest talents of all time, praising him for his efficiency, the ability to get the maximum out of each move.
Watching this video is sure to give you more of a feel for finding strong moves as we see Capablanca produce a masterclass against Aron Nimzowitsch himself. Accepting an invitation to place his Rook on the 7th rank, Capablanca smoothly engineers his other major pieces into position. At first it looks like Black’s invasive Rook will be forced to retreat but Capablanca combines threats until he is able to double Rooks on the 7th.
Now White finds himself completely pinned down but how can Capablanca progress? The end tactics are one’s you’ll remember but make sure you recall how he got the position in the first place too.
