If you’re the type of player who plays to win as Black, never happy with just a draw, then the Sicilian Defense should be part of your repertoire.
However, so deep and complex is the opening theory of the Sicilian that it can put many people off. Whole books have been written on at least 6 of the 6th move alternatives for White in the Sicilian Najdorf!
That’s why GM Robin van Kampen, the Dutch former prodigy, started using the Taimanov Sicilian in his tournaments. The Taimanov (starting 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nc6 5.Nc3 Qc7) retains many of the benefits of the Najdorf and introduces a ton of new threats based on developing the dark-squared Bishop.
The opening is completely sound and yet enjoys less attention from the masses, making it much easier to outplay your rivals.
In this free preview of his “Taimanov Sicilian” course, GM van Kampen examines how to face the English Attack where White plays Be3, Qd2 and castles Queenside. This is a strong option for the first player but also one a well-prepared player of the Black pieces should be pleased to see on the board.
White intends to play f3, g4 and storm the Kingside but Black is going to waste no time in pushing for an attack on the Queenside. While White seems to have a lead in development, his follow-up moves will all be much slower than Black’s who can quickly place a menacing Bishop on e6, bearing down on a2.
This video will teach you how to slam the brakes on White’s attack while increasing the pressure on the other side of the board. An unusual pawn capture away from the center, helps Black turn his pawns into deadly assailants. Even if the Queens come off, Black can achieve a more useful space advantage than White, making an endgame win more likely.
