Exchange Power with IM Martha Fierro!

Many amateurs think that exchanging pieces is an easy way to achieve a draw, but this is a clear misunderstanding. In fact, an exchange can be the difference between winning or losing!

In this free preview of Classical Chess Weapons: The Most Important Ideas in Chess, IM Martha Fierro answers a difficult question: when to exchange?

Following the classic game Mikhalchishin-Chernin, Fierro identifies the crucial trades that later decided the game in White’s favor. The GM only needed to know when to exchange, and the point was just a matter of technique!

Sounds easy?

Take a look to the most important position of the game (White to move): Fierro Exchange

Before continuing reading, please evaluate the position and choose how to continue. What would you play if you were White?

White has a better pawn structure (2 pawn islands against black’s 3), but it is sufficient for a victory?

A natural move would be 16.Ne5, and many masters would play it without hesitating. But the truth is that after the strong 16…Nd7! white will have to go back to f3, as 17.Nxd7?? loses to 17…Bxg5+ and 18…Kxd7, as also 17.Bxe7?? Nxe5 18.Rxc5 Nd7, threatening both the Rc5 and the Be7.

GM Mikhalchishin played, instead, 16.Bxf6!, taking advantage that Black can’t take on f6 with the bishop as the c5-pawn is loose.

So, Black has to play 16…gxf6, and his pawn structure got ruined!

Next, White played an outstanding game, showing great technique to win the endgame with this seemly slight advantage, but that was actually a winning advantage!
