Alekhine’s Sharpest Variation

The Alekhine Defense is one of these obscure defenses you don’t get to play too much but can be very dangerous if you get unprepared. That’s the reason why you must know how to play against it. But, you also need some rare variation, so you surprise your opponent more than he did!

IM Lawrence Trent, who have worked with GM Fabiano Caruana for years, analyses such a great variation is his course Beating Alekhine’s Defence.

In this free preview, he analyzes the line 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.exd6 exd6. Black players which like this line are usually solid, maneuver-oriented. So, Lawrence suggest you a sharp line, pulling them away from their comfort zone.

The suggested line start with 6.Nc3 Be7 7.Be3 0-0 8.Qf3!?.

White’s idea is very cavernman-like: play 0-0-0 and start and attack on the kingside! Usually, it would start with g2-g4, and then h2-h4. But sometimes White can use his rook on d1 to push in the center with c4-c5, creating chaos in the central files. This is not a line for calm players!

Look, for example, to the position on the second diagram:

White is putting lot of pressure over Black’s center, and there are different threats, like b2-b3 (the Nc4 has no good retreat) of d4-d5 (when Black will have many pieces hanging). Black has only one good move, that it’s impossible to play if you haven’t analyzed this position before (and that will be very rare, unless you are playing against Caruana).

Black’s only move is… 11…g5! Do you really think any of your opponent’s will play that?

So, get the chance to confuse your opponents and sharpen the position this great scoring variation from IM Lawrence Trent’s vault of opening novelties. Watch the free preview to get the full analysis!
