In the long history of chess, there have been (and there are now!) many outstanding chess masters and legends from whom we can learn plenty of key concepts and ideas. Many people often bring up the question of who is the best chess player of all time. It is never a decision that is easily agreed on, and only gets more difficult as more young players come up through the ranks and stake their claim to chess history.
One reason this debate rages on and can be somewhat controversial is that we have no way of seeing how players from different eras would play against each other directly. But, there are other ways of comparing, by looking at how the chess masters handled certain situations or positions in the game – at the very least, it is entertaining, and educational, to speculate and examine key concepts from both players.
In his third video of his four-part series on “Fischer vs Carlsen: Who Is Better?” GM Damian Lemos talks about these two outstanding chess geniuses.
On the one side, there is current World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, and on the other side there is Bobby Fischer, former World Chess Champion and one of the greatest legends in the history of the game, a household name.
This time, GM Lemos takes a closer look at how both players decided to play against 1.d4 – specifically The Grunfeld. Similar to the King’s Indian Defense, the Grunfeld is a dynamic answer to this opening choice from White.
Firstly, GM Lemos analyzes a game from Magnus Carlsen, played when he was only thirteen years of age and near a 2400 Elo rating! Secondly, we take a look at a game from the great Bobby Fischer, which starts off as a King’s Indian but then transposes into a Grunfeld.
