If you want to play chess, you first need a chess board! Of course, as well as a chess board, you’ll need 32 pieces and sometimes even a chess clock. To start a chess game, the players have to know how to set up a chessboard, to understand on which squares all of the pieces belong.
The chessboard with all the pieces may look pretty complicated in the beginning, but don’t worry – GM Damian Lemos is here in this video for chess beginners to help you with the very first steps into the world of chess!
Before we set up a chess board, let us have a look at the structure of the chessboard itself. The chess board consists of 64 squares. Half of the squares are white and the other half are black, spread out evenly. By the way, half of the chess pieces are also white while the other half are black.
The chess board has the shape of a quadrant which makes it consist of 8 horizontal lines (called ranks) and 8 vertical lines (called files). The horizontal lines are indicated by numbers from 1 to 8 and the vertical lines with the letters a to h. Consequently, a number and a letter is matched to each square which makes it easier to explain where the chess pieces are situated.
If you are the player with the white pieces, your chess pieces will be situated on the first two ranks – lines 1 and 2 – at the beginning of the game. Whereas, if you are the player with the black pieces, your chess pieces will be situated on the last two ranks – lines 7 and 8 – at the start of the game.
Sit back and let GM Damian Lemos show you where all the pieces go – you’ll be ready to play in no time!
