One question that pops up all the time when considering effective chess training is “what are the best chess openings for beginners to play”?

After all, not all chess openings are as suitable for beginners as they are for experts. Many openings require intimate knowledge of deep, strategic ideas and move-order subtleties. It doesn’t make sense to copy the chess openings of your favorite players if you don’t understand the underlying concepts.

Chess openings occur in every chess game. You can’t avoid or sidestep them. Being familiar with the chess openings you play provides something similar to a home field advantage in sports.

You don’t have to enter unknown territory in every new chess game, but have a clear plan of what to do on the first moves. It’s much harder if a player needs to spend time figuring out how to play something they’ve never encountered before. The opening is the phase of the game with all 32 pieces present, making calculating a much harder task.

On top of that, having some basic knowledge on chess openings is important to get a good position in the middlegame. Everyone loves playing chess when all of the pieces are developed, placed on good squares, the king safely castled away, while also possessing more space and superior activity. This is something any player can obtain by sound opening play. It’s much easier to play in a slightly better position. You can concentrate all your attention on generating powerful attacks instead of focusing on equalizing.

What’s more, many chess players are afraid of getting caught in a chess opening trap. Playing chess without any knowledge of chess openings is like exploring unknown territory. It can be full of landmines, ready to go off right under your foot. There are thousands, if not tens of thousands of chess opening traps out there. Studying chess openings will help you steer clear from those chess opening traps while avoiding unpleasant surprises in the games.
