D. Vucenovic (1633 ELO) vs S. Tomic (1856 ELO), Exchange Caro-Kann
Split Chess Open 2018, Round 4, 08/14/18
I played a very risky game in round 4 and I must say I was lucky to survive it. I bluffed two pawns against a solid opponent in order to get an attack going and he failed to punish that.
My opponent played the Exchange Variation against my Caro-Kann and I wanted to play something other than the boring lines with Rc8, a6, b5 for black, with the solid, but boring plan of putting pressure on his c3 pawn.
I went for a very uncommon setup to start with and then I sacked two pawns as well. The engine gods disagree with my dubious play, but my opponent failed to react properly and lost the game.
When people play chess, sacrifices work more often. Consider them even though they might be unsound!
