My opponent tried the same bad, but tricky attacking pattern I’ve faced in a game two months ago. I have learned from that game since and studied the idea extensively, as the previous game was not easy to convert.
In fact, even though the pattern is bad, my opponent, who is rated 1500, managed to get an equal position. To make sure that doesn’t happen again should I face the same pattern, I tried to find games with a similar idea. I couldn’t. That told me that it shouldn’t work most of the time.
This proves just how important learning from your games is. I won this game with almost as much time on the clock as I’ve started with. My previous knowledge gave me the chance to play good moves quickly. Pattern recognition is the key to better chess skill.
