A practice game in the Fantasy Caro-Kann against Amin, an 1800 USCF rated player.
We entered the opening and he made a mistake very early. He played Nf6 after exchanging on e4, which is a bad mistake. And I failed to punish it! I had a winning advantage and misplayed the position in which his pieces were stuck and his king in the center.
For the theory of the Fantasy variation, watch this video (to make sure Nf6 doesn’t happen to you): https://youtu.be/0yMkAJ6Pyig
We entered a middlegame in which I was slightly better and he managed to equalize. He played better than me and I got a much worse position in which I could no longer defend everything. Somehow he blundered and gave me a chance to enter a solid endgame. It was equal and it should’ve ended in a draw with perfect play. But our play was far from perfect.
I outplayed him and got a faster passed pawn. It was not really a race because he never should’ve queened, but I played terribly. In a position in which I could’ve won a whole rook I queened and lost!
Not a high quality game (especially on my part), but full of instructive mistakes to learn from.
