In this video lesson,. the RCA guest coach GM Marian Petrov analyzes one of the interesting games from the recently concluded FIDE Candidates Tournament 2021.

It is the game between Anish Giri and Ding Liren. The exchange variation was played from the Closed Ruy Lopez opening. The players castled on opposite sides and started to attack each other’s king. During the process, Ding Liren made a mistake which stopped his attack on the kingside.

In addition to that, he pushed his b-pawn which allowed Giri to take advantage of the weak pawn structure. Giri sacrificed his knight to open up the position and eventually made his way to Ding Liren’s unguarded king.
