In this video lesson, the RCA guest coach IM Mat Kolosowski analyzes a highly-instructive chess game played between Danyyil Dvirnyy and Alexey Shirov at the FIDE Online Olympiad 2020.

Shirov was playing Black and he played the Slav Defense. What’s instructive about this game is that the players castled on opposite sides, and Dvirnyy was too late to start his attack on Shirov’s kingside. This allowed Shirov to accelerate his attack on the queenside as Dvirnyy has long-castled.

In the middlegame, Shirov displayed a strategic masterpiece by placing on his queen on g3, stopping White from pushing his g2-pawn. A few moves later, he sacrificed his queen to finish his deadly attack on the queenside!
