Garry Kasparov – Oleg Vasilchenko, Kiev 1973, Tarrasch French, Guimard Variation

We are continuing the Kasparov saga with an absolutely astonishing positional victory. He was 10 years old when the game was played, and he faced an equally strong child prodigy, Oleg Vasilchenko.

The opening was a slightly offbeat Guimard French, and black made it even more uncommon with a few of his decisions.

When the opening was done, around move 10, Kasparov started playing like an absolute genius. His position kept getting better and better slowly and incrementally. Each of his moves was positionally and strategically sound, and he got a dominating position.

The best part came when black was already on the ropes – the conversion. The position was hard to play because there were no apparent plans. Kasparov found one though, and it was relentless!
