This is the first recorded tournament game Anatoly Karpov ever played. It was played in his home town Zlatoust when he was only 10 years old. He was white in a Ruy Lopez against Viacheslav Kalashnikov.

This is the first video in what is going to be a loooong series on one of the strongest players of all time – Anatoly Karpov. He was one of the most active and longest reigning world champions, and he marked a generation as being a solid, but ferocious player, who’d beat you without you seeing it coming.
We will be analyzing all of his classical tournament games, starting with his beginnings in Zlatoust in 1961.
