In this video I have covered a very important set of basic endgames – queen versus pawn endgames.
Even though most people know them well, almost everyone can mess them up and lose half a point in practical play unless they are aware of all the rules and intricacies that exist. I have tried to cover all the cases in which the defending side can draw.
Here are the basic rules you have to know:
Pawn on the 7th rank:
Rook pawn – a draw, unless the attacker’s king is within
one move of creating a mating threat
Bishop pawn – a draw because of the “corner stalemate”,
unless the king is on the wrong side of the pawn, and unless
the attacker’s king is close by
Knight, King, Queen pawn – always winning
Pawn on the 6th rank or further – always winning
