To continue the series on chess middlegames, I have covered the very important topic of static versus dynamic weaknesses (or advantages, depending which side you’re on).
I think that being able to recognize when the position is critical is a skill that’s developed out of two separate “sub-skills”; knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are, and knowing whether they are static or dynamic.
A static weakness is something that can be exploited slowly, over time, and something you don’t have to rush with at the cost of other features of the position. A dynamic strength or weakness is something that requires urgency and will often lead to a radical change in the position. It is, therefore, important ot be able to tell the difference!
