To continue the series on chess middlegames, I have covered a theme which is very often seen in grandmaster games, and is seldom played by weak players – clearance sacrifices. Giving up material in order to improve your position and make your pieces better.

This is hard for most club players because it requires you to imagine a square being weak despite it being occupied by (your own!) pieces or pawns.

The best way to learn and start noticing opportunities for such sacrifices is to learn from grandmasters. I have chosen six thematic positions. I hope they help!
