The following is an instructive video analysis by Aggelos Kesaris of one of the most fantastic chess games ever – Garry Kasparov vs Viswanathan Anand at the PCA World Championship Match 1995. Vishy Anand played the Spanish Game Open Variation and Garry Kasparov came up with a brilliant opening preparation.

He played a killer novelty at move 14.Bc2, and then sacrificed his rook for initiative. Kasparov was playing a rook down for the most part of the game while Anand was looking for ways to escape from the deadly checkmating threats from Kasparov. It looked almost as if Anand is the one who is down by a rook as they were tightly locked down on the last rank.

Nevertheless, after Anand was forced to give up his rook, Kasparov was a pawn up and had the advantage. It boiled down to a rook and bishop vs a rook and knight endgame, with Kasparov being a pawn up and a powerful connected pawns in the center. Kasparov pushed his pawns to promote them and Anand resigned eventually.
