The Modern Slav is a very annoying sideline white could go for which can, if you are unprepared, mean trouble very early on.

The setup is characterized by the queen aggressively placed on b3, and the kingside bishop fianchettoed on g2, which means automatic pressure on the long diagonal, especially b7 and c6. Black has to be careful against it, and a single mistake could mean a defeat.

The Modern is a very tricky line to play because, as opposed to some other variations of the Slav, every move counts. If you look at the main line, where black captures on c4, dragging the queen away from the attack on b7 to be able to develop the bishop, black needs to use the time he was given wisely, and a single imprecise move would mean that white can get an insurmountable edge.

That makes the Modern easier to play for white and annoying for the Slav player. So study it carefully! Learn the middlegame plans and make sure you don’t blunder into a position with a bad c8 bishop, or a hanging b7 pawn. Good luck!
