Bobby Fischer’s Ruy Lopez Squeezes 5-Time Colombian Champion

Featured is an excellent positional chess game between 16-year-old Bobby Fischer and 5-time Colombian Champion IM Luis Sanchez. Out of a Closed Ruy Lopez, Sanchez chooses the line with 9…Nd7. After the central tension is resolved, Fischer’s queen drifts toward the kingside to provoke weaknesses. It’s instructive to see Fischer initially avoid exchanging light-squared bishops, only to pursue that same exchange many moves later once light-square weaknesses surfaced. Fischer’s approach was to provoke weaknesses, trade Black’s key defender of those squares, and preserve a piece capable of exploiting them. This game is a beautiful example of positional play.
