Hans Niemann’s Nimzo-Indian Smokes Sam Shankland

Featured is a wild chess game between Sam Shankland and Hans Niemann from Round 4 of the 2025 U.S. Chess Championship. Out of a Nimzo-Indian Defense, play first occurs on the queenside with Niemann establishing a pawn on c4. Shortly after Shankland misses a golden opportunity on move 18, Niemann pounces on a key intersection square on the queenside, sparking the win of material. From there, the game quickly sharpens on the kingside where Shankland has no pieces defending, while nearly all of Niemann’s forces are aimed at that flank. The attack is relentless, and despite Shankland’s strong defensive effort, he eventually stumbles under the pressure.
