This example comes from a pawn endgame study where king activity is the decisive factor.
White’s king is very active, standing far up the board, while Black’s king is passive.
After 1. g3!, White threatens to use zugzwang — whichever pawn Black pushes, White will respond in a way that forces progress.
The critical idea is that Black is always short of useful moves, and the White king will eventually penetrate to h7, supporting the pawns’ advance.
The text notes a subtle detail: sometimes in pawn endings, whether you move a pawn one square or two squares makes all the difference. This is where Steinitz’s Rule applies — if you can choose between advancing one or two squares, you must carefully judge which keeps winning chances.
In short:
This problem demonstrates how an active king and the precise choice of pawn pushes (1 vs 2 squares) decide the outcome in a pawn endgame. Zugzwang plays the central role, and White wins by forcing Black into a position with no good moves.
