The “Game of the Century” was played on October 17, 1956, in New York, during the Third Rosenwald Memorial Tournament.
A 13-year-old Bobby Fischer, virtually unknown at the time, had the Black pieces against Donald Byrne, a respected international master.
Fischer sacrificed his queen on move 17 with 17…Be6!!, giving up enormous material to launch a brilliant attack. Instead of being behind, his minor pieces (knights and bishops) completely dominated the board. He executed a series of forcing moves (a “windmill” tactic) that drove Byrne’s king across the board and eventually delivered mate on move 41.
This game stunned the chess world — a teenager defeating a seasoned master with such creativity and precision. It instantly marked Fischer as a prodigy and earned its title as the Game of the Century.
