Ivanchuk Repels the English Opening, Hungarian Attack

This is an instructive chess game between Ido Gorshtein and Vasyl Ivanchuk from round 4 of the 2025 Fujairah Global. Ivanchuk, playing against the English Opening with the Hungarian Attack, initially aims for a light-squared bishop exchange with Bh3, but quickly changes course after sensing a queenside weakness following 15. c5. By retreating his bishop to e6, Ivanchuk creates coordination problems for White, due to the queen being tied to the defense of the bishop on a3. Once the center opens after 20…d5, White underestimates Ivanchuk’s strong idea, leading to a dominant pawn chain that restricts White’s light-squared bishop while giving Black’s bishops full control.
