Leela Gets Romantic with Stockfish in the King’s Gambit

This is a sharp chess game between Leela Chess Zero (3686) and Stockfish (3724) from the Superfinal of the Top Chess Engine Championship Season 28, game 5. The opening is the King’s Gambit Accepted, starting from the position after 6. Nf3. By move 11, the queens are off the board and we enter a complex middlegame where Stockfish establishes a dangerous f4/g4 pawn duo. Leela’s response to it is particularly instructive, and the style of play that follows echoes romantic era chess. The time control for these Superfinal games is 2 hours per side with a 12-second increment throughout.
