Leela Crushes Ethereal’s Modern Defense

This is an excellent chess game between LCZero (3692) and Ethereal (3618) from the Premier Division of the Top Chess Engine Championship Season 28, round 34. The opening is a Modern Defense, with play beginning from the position after 8…Nc6. Leela’s first move in this position aims to take control of the e5 square, a decision that has a tremendous effect on Ethereal’s king knight for the rest of the game. In the middlegame, with Ethereal short on productive moves and forced to work around a white e5-pawn, it practically becomes necessary for Ethereal to pursue an exchange sacrifice.
