Michael Adams Fishing Pole’s the Petrov’s

This is an instructive chess game between Michael Adams and Shreyas Royal from Round 6 of the 2025 English Chess Championship, played on July 20th. The opening is a Petrov’s Defense where we have a balanced position until Royal plays 16…f6, which creates long-term weaknesses on the light squares. In particular, the g6-square becomes a key target. Adams demonstrates how to steadily increase pressure, and sets up a fishing pole idea on the kingside to break through. The game concludes in only 30 moves, with Adams achieving a 99% accuracy!
