Ding Liren’s Catalan Breaks Vidit Gujrathi in 18* Moves

Featured is an instructive chess game between Ding Liren and Vidit Gujrathi from the 2017 FIDE World Cup held in Tbilisi. Out of a Catalan Opening we observe an early fight over the e4 square. Once Ding overtakes Gujrathi’s d5 pawn with the e4-break, the scope of the Catalan bishop is extended. Ding’s 16th move c5 is a thematic idea out of this opening which has a trade off of helping black’s king knight while also hurting black’s queen bishop. After Gujrathi’s 18th move, Ding obtains a decisive advantage which is easily converted into the full point.
