Featured is an excellent positional chess game between Alejandro Domingo Nunez, and David Navara from Round 1 of the 2025 European Chess Championship, played on March 15th. Out of a Symmetrical English we quickly observe a queenless position. Navara’s 18th move Rg8 abandons the only open file with the idea to activate it in an atypical fashion. This idea of activating the rook to target the game’s weakest pawn on h2 makes white commit an unforced error. Navara is relentless from there gaining ground inch by inch, and robbing all of white’s remaining pieces of any great activity. In the final position, all of Navara’s pieces are superior to black’s.
