Wei Yi’s Nimzo-Indian shreds Shankland in 27 moves

Featured is an instructive chess game between Sam Shankland and Wei Yi from Round 5 of the 2025 Prague International Chess Festival. Out of a Nimzo-Indian Defense, Romanishin variation we observe a minor piece imbalance as well as structural imbalances by move 9. A critical middlegame moment arrives once Shankland pins Wei’s f6 knight. When a pin occurs by an unopposed bishop in particular, it can be especially difficult to address. Wei Yi handles the pin excellently with key pawn advances, and then strikes forcefully on the queenside to punish a move 14 blunder by Shankland.
