The Englund gambit relies on a surprise factor and on traps and tricks white could fall for. Objectively it’s a bad opening, and if two engines were playing, white would win every game. In reality, Black wins 60% of games on lichess!

Why is that so? Well, there are several ways to win immediately by winning the white Queen or even mating white. Even if white knows exactly how to counter the Englund Gambit, the positions Black gets aren’t completely losing. The engine says 1.5, and that’s definitely playable, even on higher levels.

Black is playing for an attack, rapid development, and the initiative, and White will likely be defending unless they’re very well prepared.
