Loek van Wely cracks Svidler’s Grünfeld in 22 moves

Featured is an instructive chess miniature between Loek van Wely and Peter Svidler from the 2007 Corus A tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. Loek van Wely’s setup in respond to Svidler’s Grünfeld is to exchange, deploy his bishop on c4, and knight on e2 to sidestep any Bg4 pin. Svidler’s decision to welcome van Wely’s queen into his house on h6 is objectively sound, but he’s walking somewhat on thin ice. Loek needs to only find a way to connect with his invasion queen. With good board vision and some attention to a tactical liability in Svidler’s camp, Loek van Wely cracks the Grunfeld Defense in only 22 moves.
