Ju Wenjun | 2024 Women’s World Blitz Chess Champion

Featured is the 6th and final blitz chess game between Ju Wenjun and Lei Tingjie from the finals at the 2024 FIDE World Blitz Chess Championship held in New York. After Ju and Lei’s first 4 games and 4 draws, they headed into tiebreaks where the next win would crown a women’s world blitz chess champion. Game 5 was a draw. In this decisive 6th game we observe a Queen’s Gambit Declined, Tarrasch Defense where Lei chooses the Schara Gambit. Ju’s main task throughout the opening/middlegame phase while up a pawn, was to remain solid and find ways to neutralize Lei’s greater piece activity and lead in development. Once Ju achieved a couple key piece exchanges, it became significantly easier to realize her extra pawn advantage. With this game 6 win Ju Wenjun, who is the reigning 4-time Women’s World Chess Champion in classical, is now the Women’s World Blitz Chess Champion.
