Carlsen toasts Nepo’s French Defense in 23 moves

Featured is a chess miniature between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi from the Champions Chess Tour Finals 2024. In a French Defense (Classical) with 5. Nce2, Carlsen aims to maintain his central pawn formation. After Carlsen’s 7th move a3, we reach a position from Game 13 of the 2024 World Chess Championship where Gukesh D had the white pieces against Ding Liren. Unlike Game 13, Nepomniachtchi castles kingside before even a single exchange; this would prove to be a fatal error. Watch how Carlsen directs nearly every one of his pieces towards Nepomniachtchi’s kingside that is without a single reliable defender. This rapid chess game had time controls 10+2, and it was played on December 21st, 2024. With this win, Magnus Carlsen became a 5-time Champion of the Champions Chess Tour.
