Jacob Aagaards 3 questions are what helped me improve most in the last few years. They are simple to answer and they will help you focus on what’s important in any chess position. We often get lost when there’s no clear plan in the position. That leads to unnecessary calculation, missing threats, and even simple blunders.

Knowing what to do isn’t simple, but answering these questions will help you understand what needs to be done, and, more importantly, what needs to be prevented. I have used three positions from my own games in which answering the questions was absolutely necessary.

*The three questions are from Jacob Aaagaard’s book GM Preparation: Positional Play, Quality Chess 2012 (7-10).
