Middlegame ideas in the Caro-Kann · Road to GM, Game 355

Knowing the attacking patterns and middlegame ideas is the key to understanding an opening. The Caro-Kann is no exception. In fact, since black has less space and fewer options in most variations of the Caro-Kann, knowing what to do and what NOT to do is key to playing the opening successfully.

This was a Two Knights Caro-Kann with d3, a very rich pawn structure with multiple possible plans for each side. I chose to expand in the center, going for a very risky middlegame idea of shutting down the center and forcing my opponent to break it open.
