Every Grandmaster plays this opening and it’s clear why · Road to GM, Game 350

I hate facing this opening, and I never seem to be able to get an advantage. Black always has too much counterplay, and my position is never safe and solid. I may have to change things and switch to something that avoids it!

There aren’t many holes in my repertoire and there are very few openings I hate facing. The Nimzo-Indian is one of them. It’s the only opening that doesn’t lead to wild positions in which I don’t do well.

This game was a perfect example of just how easily black can create active play in the Nimzo. My position went from equal to busted in a single move.

There are a few openings all grandmasters play, and the Nimzo is one of them. You might add the Spanish and the Sicilian to the list and that’s pretty much it. It’s dangerous, there’s always counterplay, it’s never boring. The Nimzo may be the perfect opening.
