The defense everyone plays but no one seems to know well · Road to GM, Game 349

I face the same defense in 50% of my games. It seems that everyone plays the same thing, and yet people get confused when they see the setup I play against it.

The King’s Indian is an attacking opening, and most KID players like tactical positions in which they’re the ones attacking and their opponent is forced to defend. The problem is, since white has a permanent positional advantage due to more space and better pieces, that if the attack doesn’t work, you’ll jsut be worse!

That is what happened in this game. My opponent had no attack, and I managed to create a weakness which ended up being decisive.

When choosing a defense you should study the middlegame plans first and foremost. Theory matters very little if you’ve no idea what to do after the opening.
