In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a simple, easy-to-learn, and aggressive chess opening for Black against 1.d4: the Benko Gambit, which arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 b5.
Smirnov played this opening as Black up to the level of FIDE Master (2300 ELO rating), and it served him really well. In fact, GM Smirnov used the Benko Gambit against Magnus Carlsen’s former chess coach, Simen Agdestein, and defeated him in just about 16 moves.
He also presents the game in which Magnus Carlsen used this opening to defeat one of the world’s strongest grandmasters, Boris Gelfand.
Additionally, you will learn how to handle your opponents if they capture your pawn early in the opening with 3.dxc5, instead of 3.d5.
