Game 12: 2023 World Chess Championship | Ding vs Nepomniachtchi

Featured is Game 12 between Ding Liren and Ian Nepomniachtchi from the 2023 World Chess Championship match. Similar to game 8’s London system, we follow a similar path in this game 12 with the Colle System transposing into an Exchange Caro-Kann where Nepomniachtchi makes a mysterious looking 6th move. This move was part of his preparation, and a move Ding Liren was happy to see. Despite the slow beginning, play sharpens as soon as Nepomniachtchi castles kingside and Ding, after about 30 minutes of thought, trades his dark-squared bishop for a knight on f6. Going into game 12 Ding Liren trails 5 points to Nepomniachtchi’s 6 points. The 2023 World Chess Championship is a best of 14-game match being played in Astana, Kazakhstan. The first player to earn 7.5 points will receive the lion’s share (60%) of the approximately $2.2 million prize pool and claim the most prestigious title in chess: ‘World Chess Champion’.
