Featured is the Round 1 game between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren from the 2023 World Chess Championship match. Magnus Carlsen, in July of 2022, decided not to defend his title. Game 1’s opening was a Ruy Lopez, Delayed Exchange variation. Nepomniachtchi’s dark-squared bishop was a persistent thorn in Ding Liren’s side in both the middlegame and endgame. It would not be simple to neutralize this pressure, and 30 moves in Ding Liren found himself essentially playing on only the 7th and 8th ranks. The big question would be how exactly can China’s #1 chess player release the pressure. The 2023 World Chess Championship is a best of 14-game match being played in Astana, Kazakhstan.
