The Caro-Kann has several thematic strategic ideas which can be applied to almost all variations; the e5 pawn break, the b5 b4 pawn minority attack, control over the e5 square. All three were intergral in this game. It was a tense battle in which I simply played for the thematic ideas, and the knowledge I had surely saved me a great deal of time I’d have spent coming up with plans.
