The Carlsbad structure is one of the most important positions in chess. It’s full of ideas, and both sides have several different plans they could go for.
In this game, my opponent played without a plan, and made strange, non-thematic moves, which I managed to punish pretty quickly. This is a great example of how knowing a position helps you formulate plans and play good moves quickly. You know where the pieces should be stationed, what your structure should look like, where the pawn breaks and weaknesses are, etc. If you have this knowledge before hand, and your opponent does not, you will have an edge.
