Second IM Scalp! · Road to GM, Game 251

The Croatian League started perfectly! I defeated an IM in round 1!

I have been preparing for this game for a looong time. For 10 days I’ve been studying all of my opponent’s games and learning the middlegame patterns which could have occured in the game. I got to play a position I was expecting the most and had been preparing most heavily.

I got a pleasant advantage after my opponent made a very thematic innacurate pawn push, and then, instead of playing a move which made the position almost equal, my opponent made a tactical blunder which gave me a winning position on the spot.

I didn’t mess up. I didn’t lose my advantage until the end of the game. I played too safely, primarily making sure there were no tricks, as I was material up and winning was a matter of either queening or reducing material.
