World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in Game 9 of the 2021 World Chess Championship match that is being held in Dubai. It’s a best of 14 games where the first player to earn 7.5 points earns the lion’s share (60%) of a $2.24 million prize pool, and the title of “World Chess Champion”. The ceremonial move of c4 by Praggnanandhaa would stick, and mark the first time in the match Nepomniachtchi deviated from 1.e4. Game 9 began as an English, but soon turned into a reverse Benoni with sharp middlegame play ensuing. Carlsen obtained space with 3…d4, a point that would require the attention of both players throughout.
